Authority: Paul wrote, "And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him" (Colossians 3:17). The work and worship of the Leonard Street church of Christ is Bible centered. The Bible alone is to be followed in any undertaking of the church. There are many chuches in existence today that have been,"...carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men..." (Ephesians 4:14) because they do not obey the word of God. The way to show our love for God is to obey His word (John 14:15). The Bible is God's complete revelation of His will. "All Scripture is given by inspiraton of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, fo correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works" - II Timothy 3:16-17 This being the case, there is no need for creeds, manuals, or disciplines in the Lord's church. Why is it then that so many religious bodies in the world have these books in addition to the Bible? We are not to add to or take away from the word of God (Revelation 22:18-19).

Name: Does it matter? All you have to do is drive down any road and you will see a number of religious names. You must remember that it was Jesus who died on the cross in order to purchase the church (Acts 20:28). The church is the bride of Christ (II Corinthians 11:2). Therefore, should not the church wear the name of Christ instead of a man-made denominational name? Jesus stated, "I will build my church" (Matthew 16:18). Denominational names are foreign to the Bible and show a deviation from the will of God.

Worship: Jesus told Satan, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve" (Matthew 4:10). Instrumental music, hand-clapping, drama teams, faith groups and many other practices are common in the denominational world. The question is this: Are these innovations authorized by the word of God? And, are churches trying to worship God or please men? From the Old Testament and throughout the New, the student of the Bible will realize that God has ALWAYS authorized by what He says, not by what He doesn't say. For example, the priesthood under the law of Moses was authorized by what God said, not what He didn't say (Hebrews 7:12-14). God told Noah how to build the ark and with what to build it (Genesis 6). He did not have to tell Noah what not to use and how not to make it. The examples could multiplied over and over. The honest student of the Bible gets the picture. Biblical worship that pleases God is outlined in the New Testament:

  • The church, collectively,  prayed for Peter (Acts 12:5).
  • The church contributed their money for the work of God (I Corinthians 16:1-2).
  • The church sang without the aid of instruments (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16).
  • The church took the Lord's Supper every first day of the week (Acts 20:7; I Corinthians 11:23-29).
  • The church studied the word of God together (Acts 20:7-9).

To add anything to these Biblically authorized acts of worship is to add to the word of God and is, therefore, sinful. New Testament worship is simple and it glorifies God. He is seeking those who worship Him in "spirit and in truth" (John 4:23-24). Unlike many denominations, there is nothing in our worship that cannot be found in the New Testament. There are no drama teams, soloists, choirs, or entertainers. Biblical worship is directed to God, not man and every member is involved in each act.

Evangelism: The church of the Bible was constantly growing throughout the Roman empire. They were eager to teach people about the Lord and His church (Acts 8:12). The Leonard Street church of Christ is involved in many evangelistic efforts:

  • Door knocking
  • In home Bible studies
  • Correspondence courses
  • Overseas mission efforts
  • Gospel meetings
  • Vacation Bible School

Our goal is to be a shining light in this community (Matthew 5:13-16).
